A visit at Old Woman's Bay!
On our return trip from Wawa to Sault Ste. Marie, we discovered many
pretty bays at Lake Superior. One of these is "Old Woman's Bay".
A short path through the woods leads to the lake from the highway.
Halfway there I heard it, that great goose-music.
|
What a welcome sight they were!
My feet barely touched the ground, that is how fast I ran toward this
welcome sound. Equally fast came the geese to greet me
and of course beg for treats. What a welcome sight they were!
|
Since not seeing any geese in Wawa, we were totally unprepared
for this meeting and had nothing to give them.
Other tourists, just as exited as I, emptied their pockets for them. There I learned, that this small goose family, either chose to stay behind
at this bay during their molting time, or they missed the time to continue
on with their flight, because of early loss of their flight-feathers.
| This is a yearly phenomenon of nature and the geese
are for a few month, during the summer, totally flightless,
until the new feathers grow.
It can be clearly seen in the pictures, that their flight-feathers are gone
and the geese appear, as if they had been in a fight.

|
| Even so, I was very happy to have finally found, living, gabbling geese!
We were told that this was the wrong time of the year,
to look for geese in Wawa.
The large flocks arrive here by the thousands,
during their time of migration in the spring and in the fall.
They come to rest on the beautiful Wawa Lake, after a strenuous flight.
Here they rest for 2-3 days before continuing on, with their eternal journey.
|
| Definitely must we return to Wawa at migration time,
to see this fabulous spectacle.
