City to demolish shuttered school building
In 1978 the Superintendent of schools, closed Longfellow School. For nearly 30 years, the neighbors in this residential neighborhood, wondered what would become of this boarded up structure and watched it fall apart, brick by shingle, by broken window.
The haven to pigeons and all manner of critters is finally coming down, according to Mayor David Burger.
City Council is expected to approve the $64,800 needed to demolish the building, with Ben's Construction Co. submitting the winning bid.
Longfellow was build in 1892, for grades one through fourth. Later fifth and sixth grade were added.
After the school closed in 1978, the city schools used it for storage and in 2005 the city bought the property, to demolish it.
A relieved neighbor said: "I am glad that it is finally coming down, it should have been done years ago.
